There are so many ideas about how to increase your productivity by getting up early, but here’s the thing… if you aren’t a morning person, those tactics just won’t work for you. Now even if you’re a night owl, you probably still have to get up and get going in the morning either to get the kids or yourself to school or to get to work. These eight tips will help you, night owl, so you can have an organize your morning routine.
Top 8 tips to organize your morning
Pick your outfit and outfits for any family members (i.e. kids) the night before. This way when you get up in the morning you don’t have to think about what you want to wear. It does mean that you’ll have to check what the weather will be so you can dress appropriately, but not trying to find clothes that match in the morning while your eyes are barely open will make it well worth it.
Pick which shoes you will wear and leave them by the door. If socks are needed, put them in the shoes (unless you have a pet who will think this is a snack).
Pack lunch the night before. Purchase a lunchbox and basket at the dollar store for each family member. Put items that need to stay cold in their lunch box in the fridge. Put any items that don’t need to stay cold in that family member’s basket in the cabinet or pantry. Then in the morning all that you need to do is have your family grab their lunchbox from the fridge and their basket from the cabinet or pantry, dump the basket into the lunchbox, put it in their bag or backpack, and head out the door.
Give yourself enough time. This one might seem really obvious, but if you know if takes you 1 hour to get everything done, everyone ready, and out the door, make sure that your alarm is set at least 1 hour before you need to leave.
If you’re a coffee drinker, a programmable coffee maker is a must have. Fill it with coffee and water the night before and program it to brew so it will be ready exactly when you’re looking for it.
Drink tea or make smoothies in the morning? Plan your schedule around it. If you have kids to wake up, wake them up and make your tea or smoothie while they get dressed.
Plan what you’ll have for breakfast the night before. Or even better, have a standard breakfast and eat the same thing every day. You can change up the standard every few months so you don’t get bored, but it will cut down on thought and make grocery shopping easier if you eat the same breakfast every weekday.
Shower at night. This one won’t work for everyone since some people need a shower to wake up or have oily hair, but if you can shower at night, it will be one less thing for you to do in the morning.
Recap of the best ways to organize your morning as a night owl
The key to morning organization is planning. When you plan the night before while you are at your peak effectiveness, you will be able to prepare for success. Most people don’t have the luxury of being able to completely arrange their schedule so it’s important to figure out how to be most effective even during times when you aren’t quite bright eyed and bushy tailed. Planning your day around your strengths and using the times when you are most productive can truly help you and your family run like a well-oiled machine.
I needed this so much! I’m a night owl who slogs through the mornings. I think my favorite tip is getting your lunch prepped and packed the night before – it’s difficult to do sometimes but I’m always so thankful when I take the time to prepare it the night before and can then just grab it in the morning to go!
